Navratri is the time when we celebrate the strength of Maa Durga. The mother who protects, nurtures, and sacrifices for her children. This year, we want you to meet a real one.
Every morning, long before the sun rises over Pune, an 89-year-old woman cooks food, ties her saree tightly, picks up two sticks, and steps out of her house in a slum. Her name is Shanta Pawar, lovingly called as Ajji by the children around her.
At an age when most people struggle to walk, Ajji still works, not for herself, but for the 20 children who depend on her for their next meal.
I can’t rest; if I stop, they won’t eat,” she says softly.
She is not a goddess in a temple. But she is someone's Maa Durga every single day.

A Maa’s Life of Loss and Unending Responsibility
Ajji lost her husband when she was just 40, and life has never stopped testing her since. Her elder son passed away, and soon after, her daughter-in-law abandoned their children. Tragedy struck again when her younger daughter-in-law died during childbirth, and her younger son, who suffers from epilepsy, was left unable to work.
In the span of a few years, Ajji found herself caring for 16 grandchildren, each depending on her for love, food, and shelter. Yet, she managed to care for every single soul in her house.

Rest Was Never an Option
Despite fate testing her strength, Ajji walks out every day with two sticks in her hands. Stepping into the world for the survival of her and her children.
At an age where she should be resting, she carries responsibilities. Responsibilities of marrying her children - 6 daughters and 5 sons. But carrying such a heavy responsibility alone has become increasingly difficult for Ajji.

This Navratri, help Ajj
We bow before Maa Durga protector of the world. But a mother like Ajji protector of her own world, fights silent battles every single day. Her body is tired. Her steps are slow. But her heart still refuses to stop fighting for her family.
Your contribution can help give Ajji a peaceful life and secure the future of the children she calls her own. She has spent decades fighting hunger and hardships, and it’s time she spends the rest of her time happy and peacefully.

Because sometimes, the greatest way to celebrate our Goddess…
is to
support the one who lives among us.
